A birthday celebration at the Enchanter Creek along the Soesdyke-Linden highway ended tragically on Sunday when two young cousins died by drowning.
The girls, 10-year-old Akira La Rose and 11-year-old Joylyn Jack, were at the creek with their family members to celebrate Akira’s birthday.
A Police report said based on information gathered, the girls were last seen playing in the creek water. An alarm was raised when they could not be found, and a frantic search began for them.
Other persons who were at the creek at the time assisted the family members with their search efforts, and eventually the bodies of the girls were found under the dark coloured creek water. Both were pulled ashore in an unresponsive state.
Persons said their calls to 911 went unanswered and calls to other emergency numbers were just as futile.
The two children were rushed to the Diamond Hospital, where doctors pronounced them both dead on arrival.
Family members have been left in complete shock, including a grandmother of the two girls and the father of one of the girls, who were among the family members on the birthday trip to the creek.
