Police ransack home of Rights Activist’s mother, claiming search for drugs

US-based, Guyanese Rights activist, and social media personality, Melissa Atwell aka Melly Mel, is accusing the Government of Guyana and the Guyana Police Force of trying to silence her by targeting and intimidating her family in Guyana.

On Tuesday afternoon, a party of Policemen swooped down on the Eccles home of Atwell’s mother and grandmother and ransacked the house claiming that they had been granted a search warrant to look for drugs based on intelligence.

There was nothing found at the property and the officers never showed the search warrant to the two women or questioned them about anything.

However, in a statement yesterday afternoon which was prompted by media questions, the Guyana Police Force stated that while it found nothing during its search of the yard and the house, its ranks spotted a small bag in an alleyway behind the yard and a search of that bag revealed less than an ounce of marijuana in a ziploc bag.

The Police said it is processing the marijuana for fingerprints.

Melly Mel said the Guyana Police Force is lying about finding anything near her mother’s house. She said the search came up empty handed and was used to harass and intimidate her family and to force her into silence.

Melly Mel, who lives in the United States, has been using her social media platform to highlight and reveal widespread cases of alleged corruption within the Guyana Police Force and the Government of Guyana.

Many of the revelations on her social media platform have led to investigations and calls for international inquiries into the corruption claims that have swamped the current Government and the Police Force.
