A large section of the power plant at Demerara Distillers Limited on the East Bank of Demerara was completely gutted by fire this afternoon following the explosion of a power generator.
The Guyana Fire Service was summoned to the scene just after 4pm and according to a statement from the Fire Service, when its officers responded they discovered that the chemical and fuel bonds along with large gas cylinders were also at risk.
The fire was contained to the one power generating building. It is unclear what triggered the explosion at the company’s power plant. An investigation is to be conducted.
