Quick action by the Guyana Fire Service averted what could have been a major catastrophe in the busy Regent Street shopping area as firemen were able to contain and extinguish a fire at one of the Full Works Auto Spares building.
The Fire Service was called to the scene just before 11 o’ clock on Saturday night and quickly moved into action, sourcing water from the North Road Canal. The fire which appeared to have started in the bottom flat of the building engulfed the entire two storey building within minutes.
The building which houses a Chinese store on the bottom flat was made of wood and concrete. The entire roof of the building collapsed as fire men doused the flames. The firemen were able to contain the blaze within 3o minutes of their arrival. It is believed that a multi storey complex located next door was instrumental in blocking the wind from aiding the fire. There was minimal damage to that nearby building.
Persons in the area said they noticed heavy smoke bursting out of the building and immediately contacted the fire service. They were high in praise for the fire service and their quick response.
An investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of the blaze.
