Reports suggest the Guyana Fire Service was summoned to the scene just after 5:00 am as heavy smoke was seen billowing from inside the building.

Firemen were called to the upper High Street, Kingston area early this morning as a fire ripped through the Brahma Kumaris Yoga Centre.

The origin of the fire is unknown. There were two women in the building when the blaze started. Both managed to escape unhurt.

Reports suggest the Guyana Fire Service was summoned to the scene just after 5:00 am as heavy smoke was seen billowing from inside the building.

Within minutes the entire building was engulfed with flames and the firemen focused their attention on containing the blaze to the one building.

The Yoga Centre is located just next door to a recently constructed complex which currently houses the Observer Mission of the European Union.

A full investigation has been launched into the fire and the two women who were in the building when the blaze started at to be questioned by the Fire Investigators.

The area surrounding the Centre has been cordoned off for the past three days as the Elections Commission is located nearby and has gone into the operational mode for Monday’s elections.
