State ordered to pay $24M for unlawful killing of 25-year-old Quindon Bacchus

High Court Judge, Nigel Niles, on Wednesday handed down his ruling in the Quindon Bacchus wrongful death case, ordering the State to pay to the estate of Mr. Bacchus the sum of one million dollars ($1,000,000) for his funeral expenses, twenty two million, five hundred thousand dollars ($22,500,000) as damages for the breach of his right to life and five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) in costs.

A total of twenty four million dollars ($24,000,000).

The 25-year-old man was gunned down by the Police on the 10th June, 2022 at Haslington, East Coast Demerara.

The incident was first described as an undercover sting operation by the Guyana Police Force which led to a shootout with the deceased and members of the Guyana Police Force.

The police claimed that Mr. Bacchus was going to sell an undercover officer an unlicensed firearm, and that when the police revealed themselves to him, he ran and started firing gunshots at the police.

The police claimed that they subsequently returned fire hitting him and he succumbed to those injuries.

However, investigations revealed that there was no authorized police operation in that area and no Police Commander was aware of any such operation.

Additionally, an examination of the firearm allegedly recovered at the scene revealed that the firearm the police claimed Mr. Bacchus used to shoot at them was inoperable and could not have been fired by the deceased. There is also no civilian witness who saw Mr. Bacchus fire at the police.

As a result of the incident and the investigation of the Police, several police officers were allegedly placed on close arrest by the Guyana Police Force. One of those officers; Lance Corporal Kristoff DeNobrega, was charged for the offence of murder. He remains behind bars awaiting a High Court trial.

Two other officers; Lance Corporal Simon and Sergeant McLennon, were also charged with attempting to obstruct the course of justice. Lance Corporal Simon was also charged with the offence of conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline.

The post-mortem report noted that Bacchus died from multiple gunshot wounds.

The post mortem revealed that Bacchus received six gunshots and also confirmed that he was shot five times to the back and once to the chest.

The Court action against the state was filed by his mother, who was represented by the Dexter Todd and Associates Law Firm.
