Embattled Assistant Commissioner of Police, Calvin Brutus, was blocked on Monday from leaving Guyana for Brazil via the Takatu crossing in Lethem.
In a statement today, the Ministry of Home Affairs indicated that on Monday, a Brazilian registered car with a driver and passenger was intercepted by law enforcement officers as it approached the Takatu Bridge to cross over into Brazil.
The Ministry said the occupants of the vehicle were attempting to depart Guyana without presenting themselves to an Immigration Officer.
Upon inspection of the car, the statement said one of the passengers was identified as Mr. Brutus, who is currently under a Court order which prohibits him from leaving the jurisdiction as he is facing criminal charges. He is facing more than 240 charges related to financial crimes, and is currently on administrative leave from the Force.
The Home Affairs Ministry said Mr. Brutus was informed by the Police that he could not leave the country and he returned to Georgetown from Lethem the same evening via the Ogle Airport.
The Ministry said further investigations into this matter are underway, and appropriate responses will be taken in accordance with the law.
An Attorney for Mr. Brutus told News Source that Brutus explained that he was in Lethem to visit his ailing father and wanted to visit a relative at the Takatu Bridge. The Attorney said Mr. Brutus has denied that he was attempting to leave the country.
