Home Affairs Minister concerned about financial impropriety allegations against Acting Deputy Commissioner Brutus

Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, today said he is concerned about allegations of financial impropriety that have been leveled against Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police, Calvin Brutus.

On Thursday, the Guyana Police Force announced that Mr. Brutus requested and was granted vacation leave to allow for an investigation into the allegations made against him. The Police Force has indicated that the allegations will be investigated.

Speaking to reporters today, the Home Affairs Minister who has portfolio oversight of the Police Force, said an investigation will take place, although he could not say at the time, who or what agency will be doing the probe.

“I am concerned about the allegations. A review and investigation will be underway, to determine what are the specifics of these issues and the public and the press will be informed as we go along the way”, Benn said.

The Home Affairs Minister stated that the media will be advised on the conduct of the investigations.

Leader of the Alliance for Change, Nigel Hughes in a statement today on the allegations against the Acting Deputy Commissioner, said the Guyana Police Force cannot be expected to investigate itself particularly at the level of allegations of criminal activity against high ranking members at the level of Deputy Commissioner of Police.

The AFC Leader said an “independent external investigation” must be conducted.

On Thursday, documents surfaced on social media purporting to be deposit slips for the Police Force’s Credit Union bearing the name and particulars of Mr. Brutus.

While the Force and Brutus himself have been silent about the authenticity of the documents, one of the documents showed a deposit slip for more than $16 million prepared for an account that allegedly belongs to the Acting Deputy Commissioner at the Credit Union.

Another document showed the source of the money being listed allegedly by him as wedding gifts that were received before, during and after his wedding in November last year.

As an Acting Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Brutus was overseeing the Administration of the Police Force up until two weeks ago when there was a sudden shake-up in the responsibilities for the top brass of the Force.

Brutus was transferred from the Administration Department to the Special Branch of the Force while a number of other senior officers were assigned to other departments.
