A Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara family has been thrown into mourning after a 44-year-old woman lost her life by drowning at the Madewini creek outside the Splashmins Resort along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
The dead woman has been identified as Seeta Ghanie. The incident took place at around 5:30pm on Monday.
A Police report stated Ms. Ghanie was at the creek in the company of her husband and other family members for an outing.
Eyewitnesses said the family members were spotted in the creek along with other persons. At one stage, the husband left the creek to get something to drink, but moments later as the other family members exited the creek, it was realised that the wife was not with them.
The Police report stated that the husband, Vijay Ghanie, raised an alarm and started a frantic search for his wife along with other persons.
The woman’s motionless body was found submerged in the creek and with the help of other persons, the husband pulled her to shore. Eyewitnesses said there were several attempts at administering CPR, and the woman was rushed to the Diamond hospital.
She was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Police said there were no marks of violence on the woman’s body, but the husband explained to investigators that his wife suffers from seizures and might have had an attack while in the creek.
A post mortem examination is to be carried out on the body.
One eyewitness told News Source that although the creek was packed with persons swimming and having fun in the water, there was no lifeguard or any emergency service on duty.
A few months ago when two youths lost their lives at a creek along the same highway, the Home Affairs Minister had rolled out an ambitious plan to have lifeguards posted at all recreational creeks. That plan never materialized.
