US Congressman Rick Crawford will lead a US Congressional delegation to Guyana to meet with Government and Business Leaders, the US Embassy has announced.
The meetings are expected to examine areas of mutual cooperation.
The Embassy did not name the other members of the delegation, and has also not provided details about the visit. It will be the first visit of a US Congressional delegation to Guyana since the Donald Trump administration took office in January, and follows closely on the heels of the recent visit to Guyana and the Caribbean by the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.
During his visit, Secretary Rubio noted Guyana’s economic growth and transformation, describing the country as one of the most exciting places to be right now. President Irfaan Ali during that visit also noted the close relations shared between Guyana and the US, describing the US as one of Guyana’s greatest partners.
Since that visit, the US Government has imposed reciprocal tariffs on a number of countries including Guyana. While Guyanese goods being exported to the US faced an initial 38% tariff rate, the US Government has since announced a 90-day pause on the tariffs and a lower rate of 10% for most countries.
Still, local manufacturers and exporters are bracing themselves for the impact when those tariffs take effect.
That issue is likely to form part of the discussions with the US delegation when it engages the Government and the local business community.
