Local Government Ministry to address odor and smoke from Haag Bosch landfill site

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, has rolled out a plan for solid waste management both at the level of the community and across the Regions.

Manickchand and a team from her Ministry visited the Haags Bosch, landfill site in Eccles on Monday to assess the state of one of the country’s main landfill sites.

In a brief interview following her visit, the Minister said the question of solid waste management remains an issue for citizens right across the country and it must be addressed.

‘In some of these landfill sites we have arising issues that have to be dealt with like for the Haags bosch site, the residents of Eccles, Prospect and Windsor and so on have complained about a scent and smoke and we are trying to manage that,” Manickchand said.

The government earlier this year said it was embarking on a national solid waste programme, and will empower NDC’s and local organs to be more responsive to garbage management and disposal in their communities.

The budget for solid waste management was tripled this year to increase landfill sites, expand the fleet of compactor trucks and build local capacity to address the garbage problem.

“With the development that’s happening in Guyana we have move from 400 tons (of waste) per day to 1,200 tonnes, we have moved from about 100 trucks dumping here to 300-400 trucks dumping here, so we have to now increase our capacity of management,” the Minister said.

In addition to the solid waste programme, the Minister also announced plans to work along with the First Lady’s national beautification project within communities as it pushes government’s agenda to ensure wholesome and clean communities and villages.
