Garbage collectors locked out of dumpsite over vaccination requirement

With a garbage disposal problem already plaguing the city and neighbouring areas, more problems may be on the horizon for garbage collection as the Local Government Ministry has instructed that only vaccinated garbage collectors be allowed access to the Haag Bosch dumpsite behind Eccles.

The new requirement resulted in packed garbage trucks being turned away this morning as many of the workers on the trucks are unvaccinated.

Workers from mostly the private garbage collectors were affected.

They were denied access to the dumpsite to empty the trucks.

With their trucks lined up to the entrance to the dumpsite, the affected workers complained that they cannot understand the decision to lock them out since they don’t work at the site full time but it’s the dumpsite for the city and parts of the region.

A litter picket attached to the GT Recyclers company said he doesn’t work with the government and finds it difficult to understand the position of the Local Government Ministry which manages the site.

He explained that they were never warned bout the policy being introduced there and only learnt of its existence when they turned up this morning to do their jobs.

Another litter picker said she doesn’t feel good at all about being forced to get vaccinated. She said people should be allowed to make up their own minds and given the time to do so. She said the government is now trying to lock her out of earning a living even though she is not attached to a government agency.

Solid Waste Manager for the Georgetown City Council, Walter Narine told News Source that most of the City Council drivers and loaders have already been vaccinated so they will not be affected.

However, he noted that some of the contracting companies involved in garbage disposal for the city and privately will now have to ensure their staff members are vaccinated.

Mr. Narine explained that two weeks ago, there was a meeting at the landfill site and the companies that use the site were informed of the new vaccination requirement which falls under the government’s national vaccination policy.
