The Ansa McAL company has clarified that the mall that it will be building at Chateau Margot on the East Coast of Demerara will be built on private lands, adjacent to where the historic Chateau Margot chimney stands.
The company’s clarification came after concerns were raised across social media about the mall construction plans at the site of the monument.
ANSA McAL reminded that it has a long and proud history in Guyana, built on decades of partnership, investments and shared growth with the Guyanese people.
It explained that the development of the Chateau Margot Mall represents another chapter in that story, and is an investment that reflects the company’s continued confidence in Guyana’s future and its commitment to responsible and sustainable progress.
The company said the Mall is being constructed on privately owned land adjacent to the historic Chateau Margot Chimney which remains a protected and heritage site under state control.
It said at present, the work on the Mall site is limited to preparatory activities, including clearance and landscaping. No heavy construction has begun.
Ansa McAL has said that from the outset, it has placed the preservation of the chimney and its surroundings at the forefront of this project.
“We have commissioned a professional assessment of the structure to ensure stability and to determine any reinforcement measures needed before construction begins. We are proud to show that progress and preservation can go hand in hand – honouring Guyana’s past while building responsibly for the future”.
The company also said it will continue to work closely with the State, the National Trust of Guyana, and relevant ministries to ensure the chimney remains a safeguarded and celebrated landmark for generations to come.
