Attorney General says new Parliament to be convened by Constitutional timeline

The new Parliament is expected to be convened within three weeks, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall has announced.

Speaking during his weekly “Issues in the News” programme, Mr. Nandlall said in line with the Constitutional requirements, which states that Parliament shall be reconeve four months after dissolution, the latest date for the reconvening of the House remains November 03rd.

Opposition political parties, especially the WIN party, continue to complain over the delay in reconvening Parliament after the elections, but Mr. Nandlall said there is a process that must be followed.

“The Twelfth Parliament was dissolved by His Excellency on the 4th day of July by his Excellency and the constitution says that it must be summoned four months from the end of that session if Parliament have been dissolved, sots four months from the fourth of July and that  will take some us somewhere around 3rd November, 2025,” Mr. Nandlall stated.

The Attorney General said that the power to dissolve and summon the Parliament rests exclusively with the President , and therefore he is confident that the President will follow the constitutional guidelines and reconvene the National Assembly.

“The President has spoken on this matter and he said that the Parliament will be summoned within the constitutionally prescribed time frame. The President was referring to obviously to Article 69 of the constitution which permits Parliament to be summoned within four months from the date it was last dissolved,” Mr. Nandlall noted.

Four parties will be represented in the new Parliament, with the People’s Progressive Party having the majority with 36 seats, while the We Invest In Nationhood party will enter the Assembly with 16 seats, A Partnership for National Unity with 12 seats and Forward Guyana Movement with its single seat.
