President Irfaan Ali has assured that the 13th Parliament will be convened within the Constitutional time frame. The Constitution requires that a new Parliament is convened four months after the dissolution of the last Parliament. The 12th Parliament was dissolved on the 3rd July in preparation for the September 1, 2025 elections.
In an early morning interview just outside his Main Street residence this morning, President Ali said he has up until November to convene the new Parliament and he will stick to the timeline.
“Guyana can trust the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) Government, and you know that we will operate within the Constitution, and that is what we are doing. The Constitution gives me a time frame and you know I was elected as President, and what I can assure you and Guyana is that, it will be convened within the constitutional limits, and constitutional time frame,” the President said.
Clerk of the National Assembly, Sherlock Isaacs, in a recent press engagement, said he was awaiting a Proclamation from the President for a date for the first Sitting of the National Assembly, which will see the Speaker of the House and Members, taking their oath of office.
Four parties will be represented in the new Parliament, with the People’s Progressive Party/Civic sitting on the Government side with 36 seats, while the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party with its 16 seats, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) with 12 seats and Forward Guyana Movement with 1 seat will be in the Opposition.
Mr. Isaacs said even as the Parliament Office awaits that proclamation, it is putting systems in place for the convening of Parliament.
