Some market vendors operating at the Stabroek Square are continuing to express worry that they are being pushed out without proper notice or arrangements, despite recent assurances.
Several vendors expressed that the unexpected enforcement by the Georgetown Mayor and City Council has left them unable to earn a proper income during one of the busiest periods of the year.
Ramona Ramah, who sells eggs at Stabroek Market, said she arrived early last Thursday morning to work and was instructed to dismantle her stall.
She said vendors were issued a letter on November 2, indicating that the market would undergo cleaning, but insists the notice made no mention of a closure.

Other vendors shared similar accounts of financial strain and uncertainty. Produce vendor Sunita Sukharan, who has worked at the market for seventeen years, said the restriction has already caused her significant losses. She pointed to spoiling goods and unsafe working conditions, adding that City Hall’s response has been dismissive.
She stressed that she, like many other vendors, has a mortgage, a family and no alternative source of income.
The vendors said they attended a scheduled meeting with City Hall last Monday but left without clarity, claiming officials insisted that all goods must be removed from the roadside without providing storage solutions.
The vendors are calling for some intervention as the holiday season approaches.
