With Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister, Kamala Persad-Bissessar, indicating that her country is in discussion with Guyana to supply the country with Doctors, Opposition Member of Parliament, Ganesh Mahipaul is demanding answers from the Guyana Government on the arrangement.
In an interview, MP Mahipaul told News Source that he will be submitting a list of questions to the National Assembly, seeking clarity from the Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, on the plan to hire Trinidadian Doctors to work in the local Public Healthcare Sector.
Mahipaul wants information on the medical specialization of the Doctors, the total number to be hired, and contract period, in addition to information on their expected salaries, allowances, and benefits.
The Trinidadian Prime Minister recently stated that at least 50 Doctors from her country are expected to be hired to work in Guyana in the initial stage of the arrangement. Mahipaul said Guyana needs to provide answers.
“I am asking these questions because based on the oath I took, it is my duty to protect the people’s money, defend the integrity of local professionals, and guarantee transparency. The country deserves this information because the decisions being made will affect national spending, public healthcare, and the lives of every Guyanese citizen,” MP Mahipaul told News Source.
The APNU Member of Parliament said in the interest of transparency, the Guyana Government must also provide the nation with information on the associated costs for the hiring of the Trinidadian Doctors, including housing, transportation, insurance, and relocation support. He said the cost to taxpayers must be made clear.

“Local doctors, nurses, and medical graduates have a right to know whether they were bypassed, ignored, or undervalued. The Opposition must advocate on their behalf. Local medical professionals need to know whether foreign recruitment will limit their jobs, promotions, training opportunities, or career growth,” he said.
Information on the placement of the Trinidadian Doctors and the criteria being used to select them is also being sought.
MP Mahipaul said the people of Guyana have every right to full disclosure on the matter, especially given the financial, professional, and societal implications.
He said transparency must be the foundation of any decision involving foreign recruitment within our healthcare sector.
