The Opposition, APNU, has issued a call for the resignation of the Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues, in wake of growing questions about her amassing of wealth and purchase and construction of high-priced properties in and out of Guyana.
Leader of the WIN Party, Azruddin Mohamed, has been highlighting a number of issues related to the Minister while accusing her of being corrupt. The Minister has denied the allegations and has accused Mohamed of trying to deflect from his own legal troubles.
Mohamed has since responded with more revelations, including the purchase of a pricy Florida home in the name of the Minister and her partner.
In a statement today, the APNU said the accusations raise serious and troubling questions that can no longer be ignored.
The party reminded that in the National Assembly, Minister Rodrigues had publicly stated that she came from humble beginnings and that her family was part of the working class.
The APNU said against that backdrop, the revelation that, after just five years as a Government minister, she has reportedly accumulated significant wealth and valuable assets at home and abroad is deeply concerning and demands a full, independent investigation.
“What is currently in the public space regarding the speed and scale of this wealth accumulation is nothing short of frightening. The volume, detail, and apparent documentary nature of the evidence being discussed have understandably shaken public confidence. In the absence of a transparent and credible investigation, the Guyanese people are left with no choice but to draw conclusions based on the information presented, which appears to lend weight to the claims being made.”
The APNU said the matter is not about political rivalry or personal attacks, but it is about integrity in public office, accountability, and the obligation of those entrusted with power to demonstrate that their wealth was lawfully acquired.
The party said given the seriousness of the allegations and the damning nature of the evidence now in circulation, it believes Susan Rodrigues should immediately resign from her ministerial post to allow for an unfettered, impartial, and credible investigation.
