Minister responsible for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh has called in the Auditor General’s Office to probe allegations of a fuel buying scam at the state-owned Guyana Oil Company.
The move came after the resignation of the General Manager, Trevor Bassoo who was appointed just six months ago.
In a statement, Bassoo said there were efforts being made to discredit his reputation and character and he made a decision to resign. He has denied being involved in any wrongdoing.
Guyoil launched an investigation after statements were made by a fuel importation company that it has been left with a large quantity of fuel on its hands after Guyoil officials reneged on a commitment to purchase the fuel.
The owner of the company has indicated that while the now former General Manager was not involved in any agreement with him, two other senior officials including a Director of the Board had direct talks with him and provided a commitment to purchase the fuel.
The Chairman of Guyoil, Paul Cheong said the allegations are serious, noting that there is no evidence of any agreement between the company and the importer. The Chairman explained that Guyoil purchases its fuel supply from only two companies and there is no agreement with any third party.
He said the statements that were made by the importation company are being probed.
Meanwhile, with the absence of a General Manager, the Guyoil Board of Directors has decided to set up a special sub-committee to overlook the operations of the company while the Auditor General’s office is carrying out its own investigation into the claims.
