Use Holy month of Ramadan for accountability and self-examination -President urges

President Irfaan Ali on Sunday evening urged citizens to use the upcoming holy month of Ramadan as a time of accountability and self-examination, declaring that blaming other people for one’s wrongdoing is against the teaching of Islam.

Addressing the opening of Ramadan Village 2026, the President said there is a culture among Guyanese where instead of accepting their wrongdoings, they find ways to hide from accountability.

“Now if you look at what Islam says, it actually prohibits others, prohibit you and I from passing on our wrongdoings or blaming others for our wrongdoing. In Islamic theology, blaming others is considered a trait of the devil an injustice that combines a minor sin into a major sin, that is Islamic theology,” The President said.

The President said persons must be willing to accept the consequences if they pursue the wrong things in life and must be also willing to admit their wrongdoing and be willing to rectify it. He said, if a person refuses to, in Islam theology, that will be considered a sign of arrogance.

He said Islam teaches self responsibility, where one must accept responsibility for their action and is willing to self- correct.

“If we adopt, the wrong approach in life or pursue the wrong things, we must be able to accept the consequences of that wrongdoing, we must be able to accept the effects of that wrongdoing, in the moment we try to justify that wrongdoing by blaming others, blaming community, we are actually demonstrating a trait of the devil,” the President said.

The president encouraged Guyanese of all faiths to embrace the spirit of reflection, noting that fasting and spiritual discipline are shared across religions.

He called for Ramadan to be a period not only of prayer, but of growth in humility, compassion and national unity.
