The University of Guyana has shortlisted five candidates for the position of Vice Chancellor, the University’s Chancellor, Sir Ronald Sanders has announced.
Noting that considerable progress has been made in the search for a suitable candidate, Sir Ronald explained that 27 persons from Guyana, the wider Caribbean, Canada and India applied for the Vice Chancellor’s post.
During the review process, the Search Committee reduced the number of applicants to 15, and with the assistance of experts, that number was further reduced to five.
“The Committee then sought the assistance of professors and other university specialists of considerable stature in the United Kingdom to help assess the academic credentials of the candidate, and to support preparation of a final shortlist of five,” the Chancellor explained.
The Chancellor said the five shortlisted candidates will now move to the next stage of the process, which will include interviews and public lectures before a final decision is made.
The chosen candidate will replace Vice Chancellor Professor Paloma Mohamed, whose term in Office is currently winding down.
The Chancellor, in the statement, said the post of Vice Chancellor is of critical importance to the future of the University of Guyana, and the country’s development.
He said the University must produce graduates with the skills, competencies and adaptability required to serve a changing and growing economy, while also strengthening research, innovation and professional training.
Sir Ronald said between July 31, when the current Vice Chancellor’s term ends, and the assumption of office of the new Vice Chancellor, the University will be managed by a three-person team drawn from the University’s staff.
According to him, the interim arrangement will ensure continuity in the administration of the University, while the final phase of the selection process is completed.
Sir Ronald said the University’s Council remains committed to a process that is fair, transparent and merit-based, adding that the public will be kept informed as the search continues.
