Opposition MP accuses Government of “maximum” political intimidation following arrest and probe over gun licensed to fellow MP

Opposition Member of Parliament for the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, Natasha Singh and her husband, Shane Fordyce, have been instructed to report to the Diamond Police Station next Tuesday as investigations into the illegal possession of a firearm continues.

MP Singh and her husband were arrested on Tuesday night after Police investigators found a firearm and ammunition in a bag in the trunk of Singh’s car. The license for the firearm was also in the bag. The weapon is licensed to Singh’s fellow Member of Parliament, Dawn Hastings-Williams, who had stepped away from the vehicle at the time.

Although the ownership and license of the weapon were confirmed, Singh and her husband were still arrested. They were released on $200,000 station bail each the following day.

On Friday, Ms. Singh accused the People’s Progressive Party Civic Government of weaponizing the Guyana Police Force to victimize and intimate political opponents.

“The political intimidation is maximum! It is maximum in this country,” MP Singh said.

She said unlike the other opposition political parties, the WIN party is constantly targeted and harassed by the Government with the use of agents of the State.

“It is overbearing, that is something Guyanese understand. It is overbearing. It is overbearing Guyana. What the PPP is dong to WIN Members of Parliament, and I will separate them because I ain’t see they do the PNC nothing. Ah waiting. It is overbearing, the intimidation, the victimization, the marginalization, the discrimination, it is overbearing! It is overbearing”, Singh said in a social media broadcast on Friday.

In an emotionally charged statement, the Opposition MP accused President Irfaan Ali of being an “oppressor”. She said she was dumped in filthy Police lock-up last Tuesday night, while not being able to contact her Attorney, as her religious and other rights were ignored.

“My conscience is clear; Irfaan Ali put that in your pipe and smoke it. You can’t sleep at night. As a Muslim you are an oppressor, I am telling you that. You are an oppressor. What you have done to me, my whole family, my whole family that used to vote for PPP except for one, you lost all of their votes. When my mother sit down and cry, Irfaan you are the cause for that, and many other Indian families. Many other Indian families, they are watching you,” the Opposition MP warned.

Singh, who is muslim, was among WIN Members of Parliament who were intercepted on Tuesday night as they returned to Georgetown from an outreach to Region One, where they met with survivors and families of victims of the MV Barima ferry tragedy.

In a statement, the Police said Joint Services ranks acting on information, observed the go-fast boat belonging to Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed proceeding along the Demerara River towards the Friendship area.

The Police said the Joint Services patrol attempted to get the boat to stop, but it did not and it was pursued to the Friendship wharf where it was searched and taken into custody.

The Maritime Administration Department has since indicated that the boat was not licensed to operate.

Singh and her husband were taken into custody as they reportedly left the area.
