Discussions have begun between the Ministry of Housing and squatters in the Riverview, Ruimveldt area over their eventual relocation.
A number of living structures have been built along the shore of the river.
On Tuesday, Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, visited the area along with the Director of Community Development, Gladwin Charles, and other technical staff from the Ministry.
The Ministry says it has started to document the families and structures within the settlement.
One-on-one engagements are also underway to gather information and better understand the circumstances of each family.
It was explained that the information gathered will guide the next phase of the initiative, including relocation arrangements and interventions to address social issues affecting residents.
Minister Croal noted that the process will involve collaboration with other Government agencies, including the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
The Housing Ministry explained that the initiative forms part of the Government’s wider effort to address squatting and unregulated settlements through solutions such as relocation or regularisation, depending on the circumstances of each community.
President Irfaan Ali recently visited the same area and offered a commitment that the Government will work with the residents to ensure their relocation to a more suitable area.
