Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and his two workers, Mario Mohammed and Eugene Thorne were granted bail this afternoon in the sum of $750,000 each on the charges of unlawful possession of a gun, unlawful possession of ammunition and attempt to obstruct the course of justice.
The Court has also attached a number of conditions to their bail.
The three men arrived at Court just after 8 o’clock this morning under heavy Police security and in handcuffs. They had been in custody since Monday night when they were arrested following an incident outside the Kitty home of Special Branch Head, Prem Narine.
“This was a failed assassination attempt and now we have trumped out charges”, the Opposition Leader blurted out as he made his way in Court.
Once in Court, the charges were laid against the three men. They were charged with unlawful possession of a gun, unlawful possession of ammunition and obstructing the course of justice by discharging a firearm.
Mohamed and his two workers stood stone-faced as the charges were read to them one after the other. With the Prosecution indicating that it would be objecting to bail, Attorney Siand Dhurjon, who is representing Azruddin Mohamed told the Court that the charges were “reckless” and will not stick.
He questioned the joint charges against the three men when the details of the case relate to one weapon and three rounds of ammunition.
The Attorney told Magistrate Faith McGusty that on the night of the incident, there was only one person doing any shooting and that one person was the Head of the Special Branch Unit, Prem Narine.
He said Mohamed was in the area along with his two workers to document the large number of Police officers stationed outside the home of the Special Branch Head.

The Attorney said Mr. Mohamed and his two workers were driving through the Kitty area when they came under gunfire and the driver sped away from the scene, eventually being intercepted by the Police, with Narine himself being involved in that interception. The Attorney told the Court that nothing was found when the car was initially searched, but after it was driven by the Police to the Kitty Police station, a weapon and ammunition were suspiciously found during a second round of searches.
Further, the Attorney said Mr. Mohamed and the Special Branch Head are known to each other and the Special Branch head is a key witness in the ongoing extradition matter against Mr. Mohamed and his father.
The Attorneys representing the other two men, Roysdale Forde and Damien Dasilva, adopted many of the arguments put forward by Dhurjon and raised a number of other issues and said they were open to a number of measures being attached to the granting of bail.
The Prosecution in objecting to bail noted the seriousness of the matter, but also admitted that the investigation is not fully completed and the Police would need at least three additional weeks to conclude their probe.
The Prosecutor also admitted that the three accused were not in the car when it was driven to the Kitty Police Station by a Policeman. She told the Court that the case rests on circumstantial evidence and there was no issue with that.
In granting bail, Principal Magistrate attached a number of conditions including the need for the accused to avoid being in the vicinity of the home of the complainant. Bail was granted in the sum of $250,000 on each of the three charges, totally $750,000 each.
Outside of the Courthouse,
The matter will continue on the 6th November, 2026.
