The Leader of the Opposition, Azruddin Mohamed, was arrested this afternoon on allegations that he paid a bribe to obtain surveillance video recordings from the Guyana Police Force’s Safe Country Command Centre. But his Attorney, Damien Da Silva told reporters that he is innocent.
The Attorney explained that the video recordings, which showed the Head of the Special Branch, Senior Superintendent Prem Narine shooting at the Opposition Leader’s vehicle, were provided by high-ranking members of the Police Force.
The Opposition Leader was arrested at Eccles on the East Bank of Demerara this afternoon and taken to the Police Force’s Headquarters at Eve Leary before being transferred to the Kitty Police Station.
His arrest comes one day after the police visited his home and demanded that he turns himself in.
He is accused of paying a 20-year-old Police Constable $800,000 for the unauthorized release of the CCTV video recordings of the shooting incident.
“I understand that the allegation is that he would have bribed or paid a constable $800,000 for surveillance footage. We know of no such allegation. Mr. Mohamed would have received several videos from several public-spirited citizens including high-ranking police officers. Now, we will obviously keep that information private, confidential but at this point we know of no such allegation of paying any moneys to a police constable,” Da Silva told reporters.
According to the Attorney, the Opposition Leader never met the young Police Constable who was arrested on suspicion of providing the video.
“Mr. Mohamed does not know this young man, does not know this constable. As I said, Mr. Mohamed received several videos from public spirited citizens, some of them being high-ranking police officers. Now if you observe that video is actually a compilation of several videos, so, it is not one video he would have paid to this constable to receive. This was given to him by several high-ranking police officers. So, we know of no such allegation of paying any constable $800,000. We don’t know of it,” Da Silva maintained.
Da Silva said should the police proceed to charge his client, he will be ready to defend his client’s innocence in Court.
“I anticipate and expect him to be charged. With Mr. Mohamed they usually hold him for a 72 but we have to anticipate that he may be put before the Court even tomorrow,” Da Silva said.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Office of the Leader of the Opposition said it will not disclose the name or identity of its source that supplied the video of the shooting incident in Kitty, which raised new questions about the Police Force’s official account of the incident.
At a press conference on Monday, the Opposition Leader played the leaked CCTV video recordings of what transpired on the night of October 12, 2026, and contradicted the earlier police accounts.
Since then, the Police Force headed by Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken has not weighed in on the content of the recordings, but proceeded to arrest the Constable and his mother, as well as the Opposition Leader.
