32-year-old miner murdered; Others injured in attack at Siparuni over stolen gold

An investigation has been launched into a violent attack at a mining camp at Siparuni in Region Eight that has left one miner dead and at least two others nursing serious injuries.

Police investigators have traveled into the area to probe the incident, which has left 32-year-old miner, Rowell La Cruz dead. The young miner was originally from the village of Warapoka in North West District.

The injured miners have been identified as a 36-year-old man from Blygezight, East Coast Demerara and Fair View Village, and a 25-year-old from Paramakatoi village.

A police report this morning explained that the incident took place on Tuesday morning.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the now dead miner, and another man who were both employed at a dredging operation, were in the kitchen area when they were approached by three other men who accused them of stealing gold from a sluice box.

The two miners were then ordered to a nearby watch camp where they met another man who also questioned them about stolen gold.

It is alleged that the suspects, armed with a handgun, cutlasses and a mattock handle, dealt the men several blows about their bodies, causing injuries. The Police were eventually contacted and found the three injured men at the scene. One of them was pronounced dead, while the other two were rushed out to the hospital. A full investigation is underway.
