4-years in jail and $39M fine for man held near airport with 57lbs cocaine

Three days after he was arrested near the Cheddi Jagan International Airport with 57 pounds of cocaine in his car, Providence and Albouystown resident, Christopher Douglas, appeared in Court today and pleaded guilty to the drug trafficking charge.

With the guilty plea, Magistrate Sunil Scarce sentenced him to 4 years in jail and fined him just over $39 million.

A statement from CANU indicated that its officers were conducting routine operations at a cargo company close to the airport, when they intercepted the car with the driver as the lone occupant.

CANU said a search of the car uncovered 23 large brick-like parcels of cocaine along with a 9mm gun with 14-matching rounds.

The driver, Christopher Michael Douglas, who told investigators he lived in both Providence and Albouystown, was immediately arrested and escorted to CANU headquarters along with the seized cocaine and gun with ammunition.

CANU said the 57.3 pounds of cocaine that was seized carries a street value of more than $27 million.
