4 years in jail for 60-year-old woman convicted of cocaine trafficking

Nine months after she was held at the Cheddi Jagan Airport with 24 pounds of cocaine concealed in cookie packages, a 60-year-old woman from Haslington has been found guilty of drug trafficking and sentenced to four years in jail.

In a statement this morning, the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit announced that the woman, Unique Sunshine London, was found guilty of the drug trafficking crime, at the completion of her trial this morning.

In addition to the four year jail sentence, Magistrate Sunil Scarce, also fined the 60-year-old woman $16.7 million.

London, was an outgoing passenger at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport back in September last year, when CANU agents became suspicious after noticing a large quantity of cookie packages in her carry-on luggage.  Additional checks of the packets revealed cocaine.

London was immediately arrested.

CANU said all of the substance in the packets tested positive for cocaine. The total value of the 24 pounds of cocaine was listed as being close to $12.3 million.
