One of three men, who stood earlier this year before Principal Magistrate, Judy Latchman and were slapped with charges of robbing a Chinese businessman, was yesterday sentenced to 56 months in prison. The charges were dismissed against the other two.
It was alleged that Andrew Vieira along with Winston Mackenzie and Fayaud Amid robbed businessman, Zhou Cheng of more than $28.5 million worth in various items.
During the early stages of the trial, the Court heard that on the day in question at Craig, East Bank Demerara, the three stormed into the man’s business, armed with handguns and demanded his valuables.
The businessman who’s feared for his life, handed over his mini-bus along with two cell phones, fish glue and $500,000 in cash.
The Attorney representing Andrew Vieira told the Court that he believes the statement that was given by his client to the Police was actually made up by the Police. In that statement, the man told officers the he was the ‘look out’ man while the crime was being committed.
In her ruling, Principal Magistrate, Judy Latchman stated it was based on the fact that violence was used when the crime was committed and Vieira’s his oral statement, that decided to sentence him to 56 months behind bars after finding him guilty.
