Five teens among 15 charged for “acts of terrorism” over fiery protests

Five teenagers were among 15 men dragged before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court this morning to face “acts of terrorism” charges, which were related to Monday night’s fiery protests in Georgetown and a number of other communities.

The 15 accused were all denied bail and remanded to jail.

Those who faced the Court this morning were Leon Albert and Hassan Muhammed who are both 18-years-old, 19-year-old Shem Howard and Antonio Lawrence, 20-year-old Sherwin Nelson and Desafio Harvey, 27-year-old Vincent Trim, 31-year-old Keon Akeem, 34-year-old Kevin James and Kevin Rodney, 49-year-old Omadath Bridgemohan, and 53-year-old Qubert Elgin and Ron Mitchell.

Additionally, 18-year-old Emmanuel James and 25-year-old Jamal Small were charged with Acts of Terrorism, as well as Break and Enter and Larceny.

Some of the accused cried in Court as the charge was read to them and also complained about being brutalised by the Police and not being allowed to contact their families or an Attorney.

The Police said the 15 men were arrested for allegedly carrying out acts of terror including setting fires to block public roadways.

The Guyana Police Force said in the coming days, several other persons will face the Courts to answer similar charges. The Force has been issuing wanted bulletins for several persons in connection with incitement of public acts of terror.

The protests escalated on Monday after a post-mortem examination that was done on the body of 11-year-old Adriana Younge who was found in a hotel pool, concluded that she died by drowning.
