Man bolts from Taxi after Police find counterfeit money in his possession

A man who handed over a quantity of counterfeit money to the Police during a search at a roadblock managed to escape, leaving the fake notes behind.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force said ranks were on duty at a roadblock along the Helena Public Road on the East Coast of Demerara, when a passenger in a taxi started to act in a suspicious manner.

The Police said the man was asked to declare any item he may have in his pockets, and it was then that he whipped out a quantity of Guyanese currency comprising of five thousand dollar bills.

The Police determined that the money appeared to be counterfeit upon examination. When that information was made known to the suspect, the man ran from the car. The Police gave chase, but the unidentified man managed to escape. The Police said the forged currency amounted to $280,000.

The driver of the car was taken into custody for questioning and his car was also detained. The Police found nothing suspicious in his possession.

The investigations are ongoing.
