Well-known city salon owner, Jessica McKie is in the custody of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit, while her husband and a former national cyclist are being sought in connection with the ongoing investigations into the 156-pound cocaine bust at the Cheddi Jagan Airport.
Owner of the popular “Jessica Does My Hair” salon, Jessica McKie was arrested at her Republic Gardens home after CANU agents conducting a search of the property said they found traces of cocaine in the house. The CANU agents were at the house in search of hairstylist’s husband, Gavin McKie, who was reportedly named as a suspect in the multi-million dollar cocaine bust at the Cheddi Jagan Airport last week. It is suspected that the husband might have already left the country.
This afternoon, CANU issued a wanted bulletin for the man, Gavin McKie, and asked that anyone knowing his whereabouts to contact the drug enforcement agency.
CANU also issued a wanted bulletin for businessman and retired national cyclist, Tyrone Hamilton.
CANU investigators have indicated that he is wanted for questioning in connection with the same drug bust at the airport, and is believed to be the person who allegedly transported the bags with the cocaine to the airport. Two airport workers, who were reportedly observed collecting the bags over the airport’s fence and were later nabbed with the bags have since been charged in connection with the bust.
The 156 pounds of cocaine was discovered in two suitcases that were being prepared to be loaded onto a British Airways flight last Thursday.
Drug Enforcement Officials have described the bust as the largest one to take place at the airport. It came weeks after 40 pounds of cocaine was found in the suitcase of a man who traveled from Guyana to the US stashed in packages of shrimp. A few weeks before that, an untagged suitcase with 50 pounds of cocaine was discovered at the Pearson Airport in Toronto, Canada, after the bag was removed from a flight that came from Guyana.
There have been no local arrests in connection with those two cases, but the successful passage of those drug laden suitcases through the airport, forced CANU to step up its monitoring of airport workers, especially those who work with private operators in the security and baggage handling areas.
