Schoolgirl asks Police to take no further action in rape allegations against Minister Dharamlall

After being in protective custody for over a week, the 16-year-old school girl who filed a complaint of rape and sexual assault against the Minister of Local Government, has asked the Police to no longer pursue the matter.

In a statement this evening, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed to News Source that the teenager has given a ‘no further action statement’ to investigators.

He said the statement was given in the presence of one of her parents and a representative from the ChildCare and Protection Agency.

According to the Crime Chief, the file is currently being prepared to be sent to the DPP for further legal advice.

The Police had initially completed its investigations last Thursday and dispatched its file to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice. Earlier this week, the DPP returned the file to the Police, seeking additional investigations. The file was never sent back to the DPP, but this afternoon the Crime Chief said the girl first indicated to her parents that she no longer wanted the matter to continue.

Attorney at law Dexter Todd who was retained to look into the interests of the 16-year-old said the DPP cannot simply discontinue the matter based on the teen’s statement made after being in protective custody for more than a week. He said it has now become the case of the victim turning into the accused.
