Three charged for 240-ounce Gold bust at CJIA

The Guyana Police Force on Thursday announced that three persons, including a mother and daughter, have been charged in connection with the large gold bust at the Cheddi Jagan Airport earlier this week.

44-year-old, Ian Jacobis, , 52-year-old Shameena Ahamad, and 34-year-old Ashiana Salamaly, appeared at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court today where they were all charged for the offence of 𝑬𝒙𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑮𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒂 𝑳𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒆 – in contravention of Section 8 of the Guyana Gold Board Act, Chapter 66:01, contrary to section 23 (a) of the said Guyana Gold Board Act, Chapter 66:01.

Ahamad is the mother of Ashiana Salamaly.

The three accused appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman, and all pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Bail was granted in the sum of $600,000 each, with the condition that Ian Jacobis lodges his passport at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court and report to the Clerk every first Friday of the month, while Shameena Ahamad and Ashiana Salamalay are to report to the Clerk every Friday pending the outcome of the matter.

The matter was adjourned to 18th June 2024.

Ian Jacobis is said to be an employee of the Ahamad family. The mother and daughter are both U.S citizens. There are other suspects being sought in the matter.

The three were held at the airport with more than US$560,000 worth of raw gold disguised as silver plated jewelllery in their possession.
