Two die after Durban Street drive-by shooting

An all black party on Durban Street ended on Saturday morning tragically as gunmen opened fire on a group of persons standing outside the venue of the event, moments after the music was turned off and persons were heading home.

At least six persons were shot and two of them have since died from their injuries. On Saturday morning, businessman Anthony Havescome aka “Pandit” was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Hospital just after being rushed there. On Sunday morning, businessman, Lawrence Wayne aka “Boy Boy” died from his injuries. Both men suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Three years ago, Wayne was freed of a murder charge related to the shooting of a suspected bandit outside his business place during a robbery.

A number of the other persons injured in Saturday morning’s shooting incident are known to law enforcement and have had previous brushes with the law. Among the injured from Saturday’s shooting are former murder accused, Teon Allen aka “Spoil Child” who suffered a gunshot wound to his shoulder, and former Policeman Lloyd Roberts, who is nursing gunshot injuries to his chest and hip.

Three years ago, Teon Allen was charged for the murder of his ex-girlfriend in Linden. He was later freed of the murder charge. He was also charged in relation to the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, including a few months ago.

In 2017, Lloyd Roberts was charged and later freed over the shooting death of a 19-year-old outside a Georgetown nightclub. He had also been fingered in a number of other shooting incidents.

Investigations into Saturday morning’s drive-by shooting on Durban Street are following a number of leads as they try to figure out a motive and who exactly was the target of the gunmen.

Eyewitnesses of the shooting incident related to investigators that the party was stopped by a Police patrol at around 5am and while many of the patrons left, others remained and were hanging out just outside the venue. The party’s host told investigators that with his patrons gone, he was checking off his bar, when he heard loud gunshots from outside the venue.

Other persons recalled seeing a dark-coloured car pulling up and opening fire on a group of persons who were standing on the roadside, leaving many of them injured and on the ground. The car sped away from the scene and was later found abandoned at Manatee Place in South Ruimveldt.

Injured

The car’s registration was traced to its owner, a woman, who related to investigators that on the same morning, she was accosted by two armed men on a motorcycle and forced to surrender her car in the same Durban Street area. She said at the time she was heading home with some friends and they were all forced out of the car.

Back on the scene of the shooting, investigators reported that they were able to retrieve 29 spent 9mm shells and one live 9mm round. They also found four pieces of metal fragments and six projectiles. A number of cars that were parked in the area were also found with gunshot damages.

Investigations into the deadly drive-by shooting are ongoing.
