Education Ministry denies agreement reached with GTU on negotiation period for salary talks

Hours after the Guyana Teachers’ Union stated that its meeting with the Ministry of Education on Thursday ended with an agreement that the salary negotiations will begin with the 2019 to 2023 period, the Education Ministry has stated that there has been no such agreement.

In a statement last evening, the Ministry of Education denied the reports from the Guyana Teachers’ Union and stated that the union has only proposed that the period be negotiated, and no agreement has been reached for that to take place.

The Ministry said the Government maintains its original position that any multi-year agreement must start from the year 2024 and not retroactively.

The two sides met yesterday for their first meeting that was birthed out of the Court ordered mediation process. The meeting got off to a rocky start with the Education officials insisting that negotiations on salary increases covers from this year.

The meeting paused for a break with no agreement in place on the period to be discussed. However, the GTU stated that upon resumption of the meeting, an agreement was reached for the 2019 to 2023 period to be up for negotiations as part of the salary increase talks. The Education Ministry has now denied there was an agreement on that period.

The two sides are set to meet again on Tuesday.
