Days after the Government offered teachers a salary increase of 9% for 2024 and that offer was rejected by the Guyana Teachers Union, the Government has increased the offer to 10%.
News Source has learnt that since the last meeting between the two sides on Thursday, the GTU President has been informed that the Government is willing to offer teachers the 10% salary increase for this year, along with an 8% increase for next year and a 9% increase for 2026 as part of a multi-year package.
The GTU General Council met on Friday to discuss the latest offer. While some members said the offer should be accepted, other members rejected it completely and indicated that the union should continue the negotiations for a higher percentage.
The GTU President has asked branch representatives to discuss the issue with the wider membership over the weekend, although the majority of General Council members appear set to accept the offer.
In a message to some members of the union, the GTU President indicated that a signing ceremony to accept the offer could be done as early as Monday.
“We are aware that what is agreed was not what was requested. However, our teachers deserve to be compensated in every avenue possible during these difficult times. I have also pushed for dues to be remitted to GTU on or before September in keeping with court ruling”, he wrote.
In many of the branch groups, teachers have made it clear that the offer by the Government is unacceptable. The union was pushing for an increase of more than 35% for this year.
