Overjoyed top performer surprised with perfect NGSA Score

In an exceptional performance that will go down in Guyana’s history, Academy of Excellence student, Tanasha Mayers, secured a perfect score at this year’s National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA), making her the country’s top performer at the exam.

Mayers secured the maximum perfect score of 487.88 marks, which would be only the second time in the country’s history that a student has attained full marks in the assessment that covers the subjects of English Language, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science.

The 10-year-old, who aspires to be a lawyer, told reporters that the announcement that she topped the entire country took her by surprise.

“I was surprised,” Mayers said.

Her mother Tiffany Daniels said she is overwhelmed with joy.

“I am overwhelmed, I am over joyed, I couldn’t be more proud. We worked hard, she worked hard, sometimes we worked probably pass midnight. We worked hard and she made us proud,” her mom said.

In the second position is Kalissa Haimpersaud – a student of Huis’T Dieren Primary School. Haimpersaud secured an almost perfect score, gaining 487 marks in the national examinations.

Three children – Christian Ramsay, Michaela Sammy, and Sandhyaa Swammy – came in third after scoring 486.96.

Declaring that she believes in Jesus Christ, Micheala Sammy of Stella Maris Primary School said she could not have done it without the grace of God, and the support of her parents and teachers.

“It was a balance between hard work and play. I don’t believe in all those long hours, I don’t believe in that,” Sammy said.

Her mother Debbie Sammy told News Source that her remarkable success at this year’s NGSA came as no surprise.

“I am so proud of her, very proud, very proud. We expected this because she worked really hard, so we expected her to do well,” her mom said.

Her father, Michael Sammy added that his daughter overcame a lot of challenges to arrive at this position. He said she received tremendous support from her grandfather, Micheal Sammy Snr and her teacher, Rene Clarke, who worked tirelessly with her.

Leah Hill of New Guyana School, who came in 6th with 486.91 marks, said she is thankful.

The 12-year-old said studying was a little difficult but with the help of God and family, she has succeeded.

“I would like to thank God with the knowledge, wisdom and understanding, my parents for supporting me, my teachers, my principal, my director from the New Guyana School, my grandparents for praying and encouraging me and my uncle,” Gill said.

Her mom said she is overwhelmed with joy, and extremely proud of her daughter.

In the seventh position are Asiyah Khan and Emma Klelawan with 486.13 marks. They were followed by 9 pupils who all gained 486.09 marks. They are Axela Vieira of Covent Garden Primary, Safeerah Sheriff of the New Sapodilla School of Excellence, Katy Budhan of Success Elementary School, Chloe Daniel of the New Guyana School, Knial Williams of North Georgetown Primary School, Sarah Defreitas of Stella Maris Primary School, Ziyad Mohamed of CV Nunes Primary School, Kayliah Persaud of Mae’s Primary School, and Roshini Seecharan of C.V Nunes Primary School.

Roshini Seecharan, 11, told News Source that she is happy to be among the top performers. She said she would like to become an entrepreneur.

Another top performer, Knial Williams said he is elated.

“It makes me feel elated and very excited. I studied very assiduously by working the past papers, doing practice test, and doing the quiz me,” he said.

His parents said there were long days and late nights but they prioritized his rest. They said Knial put in the hard work and was confident that he would have placed among the top 10.

A total of 17 students secured the top position.
