Most LGE results should be known by tonight -GECOM CEO

As the polls closed at 6 o’clock this evening, Chief Elections Officer (CEO), Vishnu Persaud told News Source that the majority of results for the Local Government Elections should be known by tonight.

Under the electoral laws, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is required to deliver the results of the elections within five days, however, Mr Persaud anticipates the results will be in much earlier.

“Most of those results will come in tonight, because they are from the NDCs, and there are small numbers of polling stations. So, most of the Local Authority Areas results should be available tonight. I think only Georgetown is likely to go over to tomorrow,” the Chief Elections Officer told News Source.

The Chief Elections Officer said based on early reports of the day’s activities, the electoral machinery worked well with no major hiccups reported.

“The machinery worked, and poll has progressed smoothly…We had things, but nothing that inferred with the conduct of the polls,” Mr Persaud said.

While indicating that it was still too early to provide information on the overall voter turnout, the CEO assured that the information will be available in the coming days.

In 2018, the Local Government Elections turn out was recorded at 36.3%. More than 570,000 were on the voters list at the time.
