With nationwide efforts to guard against the coronavirus, the Guyana Police Force has announced that it will not be processing applications for public events, including Barbecue permits, fairs, and parties.
The move by the Police Force is part of the efforts by the Health authorities to dissuade large gatherings and assemblies.
The Police Force has also informed Regional Commanders across the country that they should not entertain any such requests.
A number of major national entertainment events have already been canceled.
The Linden Town Week has been cancelled by the Mayor and Town Council in the bauxite town and the Rupununi Rodeo has also been cancelled by its organisers in the Region Nine area.
The organisers of the Magnum Stage show which was expected to feature a number of Jamaican artistes have postponed that event also while the organisers of the Guyana Carnival have indicated that they continue to closely monitor the situation and will likely make an announcement soon.
At a press conference yesterday, Police Commissioner Leslie James said the Force has also been employing its own measures to guard ranks against the disease.
“The Covid-19 is real and there is no known cure and you should take all precautionary measures that are available”, the Commissioner said.
Guyana has recorded four cases of the coronavirus, all related to the same family. One of the family members died from the virus and the other three tested positive after. Those three are now in mandatory quarantine.
