Power delivery and better management of the Guyana Power and Light Company are to be given a boost under a new improvement programme being funded by the Inter American Development Bank and the European Union.

Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson, on Thursday announced that the government has given its no objection to the $1.6 Billion project.

“This project will be done in two components”, she said, while pointing out that “the first component will deal with the improvement of capacity building for the executive management of the Guyana Power and Light Company and the other aspect of the project will focus on improvement in loss reduction area”.

She said by 2020, the government is pushing to have losses experienced by the company reduced by over 20%.  Minister Ferguson said that under the project, a more efficient Guyana Power and Light company should emerge.

Unserved communities are expected to be high on the agenda as part of the project.

Over the past decade, GPL has been faced with several problems that forced the previous government to pump billions into the company. The company is currently going under some restructuring under its new board.
