17-year-old man chops teenage girlfriend to death

A 17-year-old young man from the Diamond Housing Scheme on the East Bank of Demerara is in Police custody after he reportedly chopped and stabbed his girlfriend to death on  Thursday afternoon during a heated argument.

The young lady has been identified as Angela McAlister of Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara. She is believed to be 16 years old.

According to Police reports, the two teenagers who shared a relationship were involved in an argument when the young man became angry and started to beat and chop hid teenage girlfriend about her body.

The young woman was rushed to the Diamond Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Police sources have confirmed that the young man whose name is still to be released, was taken into custody.

Over the past week, there have been a number of brutal domestic violence cases. In one case at Zeelught on the East Bank of Essequibo, a father went on a murderous rampage and chopped his two young children to death before chopping his wife about her body. The woman lost an arm and all of her fingers on the other hand.

Then in Sophia, a mother and her three daughters came under attack from her husband during an argument. The woman was badly chopped to her head and other parts of her body and her young daughters were also attacked by the man. They were all hospitalized in serious conditions. In both cases, the suspects remain at large.

Earlier this week, the Guyana Association of Women Lawyers issued a call for safe houses to be established for victims of domestic violence. Guyana has seen an out of control increase in domestic violence cases and also in the number of women being killed in abusive relationships.
