An eighteen year old, Lusignan girl was shot dead on Thursday afternoon by a gunman who calmly walked up to her, fired a shot at close range and grabbed her cellphone.
The dead teenager has been identified as Ashmini Harriram of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara. According to her cousin, Fiona Somwaru, they were both in Georgetown and had just arrived back in Lusignan when Ashmini was confronted by the man who stepped out of a heavily tinted parked car.
She said just as her cousin came out of the bus and was walking ahead, when the man “just walked up to her and shot her just like that and she had the phone and some money she was counting. And he took away her phone”.
The young woman said she does not know if they had been followed from Georgetown but said when they got out of the bus, the car was parked close by. The gunman escaped.
The teenager was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Hospital where her relatives wept uncontrollably over the loss. A police investigation is underway.
