24 months in jail and $2.5M fine for man who posted private photos of ex-girlfriend on social media

Just over a year after he was charged with stealing the private photographs of his ex-girlfriend from her phone and posting those photographs on social media, 34-year-old Jeremy Smith was today sentenced to 24 months in jail and fined $2.5 Million after being found guilty of cyber crime charges related to the photo leak.

Smith, who is an IT Technician, was originally charged in July, 2024 after his former girlfriend filed a complaint stating that he managed to gain access to her phone and WhatsApp messages and copied several of her private photos. He shared the images on social media after the woman moved on from the relationship.

During the trial, the victim told the Court that she was forced to file additional Police complaints against the man as he called her phone and harassed her repeatedly after she pressed ahead with the criminal charges over the photo leak.

The Court also heard that two years before the incident, the woman had taken out a restraining order against the man following his constant threats against her.

There are a number of other similar cases before the Courts.
