$30.5 Billion being sought by Government in supplementary budget for $100,000 cash grant

$30.5 Billion being sought by Government in supplementary budget for $100,000 cash grant

On Wednesday, the Government will be asking the National Assembly to approve $30.5B to facilitate the $100,000 one-off cash grant initiative targeting Guyanese 18-years and older.

The $30.5B forms part of the $84.5B being sought in supplementary funding by the Government.

Senior Minister with responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh said the Government is looking to aggressively roll out the initiative before the end of the year.

“We want this to be done as quickly as possible. Here again you would note, on the financial paper that I submitted yesterday, that we will be considering tomorrow, we have requested a supplementary appropriation of $30B to meet costs associated with this distribution, which reflects aggressively how we want to roll this out because we really want to roll it out aggressively,” Dr Singh told reporters.

He said the initiative will be rolled out in three stages registration, verification and distribution.

It was explained that citizens would first be invited to register for the cash grant within their communities, and in the case of public service workers, at their place of work.

“The first step is look out for the publication of the registration schedule for your area, and when that registration schedule for your area is published, I would ask that everybody of eligible age, please turn up and get registered. Turn up with your ID card or passport and get registered,” Minister Singh said.

Already, the Government has captured the data of residents in Region 9 and some public service workers.

He said once registration is completed, the Government will engage in a verification process to ensure there is no duplication. Payments will be issued upon the completion of the verification process.

“So, we will publish a second schedule which is a distribution schedule when we will go back to those very centres where we took the registration and we will distribute the cheques at those very cheques that we took the registration,” he explained.

Minister Singh said it is important for eligible Guyanese to get registered for the grant.

Though the Government is asking for an initial sum of $30.5B, it is expected that by the end of the initiative, $60B in grants will be issued.
