The Guyana Police Force has released statistics for the first quarter of 2016 which showed a slight decline in murders and robberies under arms.

Forty murders were recorded for the period January 1 to March 31, 2016 when compared to 42 murders for the same period during the previous year, representing a 5% reduction.

There was a 10% reduction in those robberies committed with the use of firearms.

The statistics also show that there was a decrease in robbery with violence, robbery with aggravation and larceny from the person for the same period under review.

Seventy rapes were also reported during the Months January to March, representing a 16% reduction for the same period in 2015. There were no reports of kidnapping and piracy for the period under review. Overall there was a 14% reduction in crime.

“A number of initiatives that the Force has employed in contemporary times have resulted in a decrease of serious crimes that we are experiencing.

Our implementation of social problem solving strategies, such as the Social Crime Prevention Programmes, and the strong partnership we have forged with civil society, are yielding dividend in public trust and the development of stronger social fabric in the communities within Guyana,” the police said in a statement.

The police force has been credited with doing a better job in solving many cases and it credits a growth in public trust for that.

The police force has revealed that it is now getting more accurate information from the public and better support from witnesses.

Additionally, police investigators have been exposed to more training.
