Four days after he was stabbed outside a hangout spot in the East Coast Demerara village of Victoria, 47-year-old, Andre Wilson, succumbed to his injuries at the Georgetown Hospital early this morning.
Family members have been left devastated by the death. Wilson was well known in the community and his attacker was well known to him also.
According to family members, Wilson and some friends from the village were hanging out at a shop when another man, Sherwin Elias arrived on the scene. The men at the shop, including Wilson, called out to Elias by a false name that many persons use for him in the village. Elias reportedly told the men that he should only be called by his correct name and after an argument ensued, the two sides were able to settle their differences.
However, according to eyewitnesses, as Elias was walking away from the shop, another man who was now arriving called out to him by the false name that he had earlier objected to being called. In a fit of rage, it was reported that Elias rushed to his car and armed himself with a knife. Believing that it was Wilson teasing him about the name again, eyewitnesses said Elias rushed over to Wilson and stabbed him to the abdomen.
The incident left confused, with persons telling Elias that it was not Wilson who had called him by the false name. The injured Wilson was taken to the hospital in a fully conscious state. He was assisted by others in walking away from the scene to a vehicle.
Once at the hospital, he was rushed into surgery and was on his way to recovery when it is suspected that he suffered a relapse this morning and died shortly after developing breathing problems.
In a statement this afternoon, the Guyana Police Force indicated that the suspect remains in custody and will face charges soon.
