AFC Leader sees PPP as more of a commercial enterprise than a party focused on the people

Leader of the Alliance for Change, Nigel Hughes, has described the governing People’s Progressive Party as a commercial enterprise, rather than a political party looking out for the people.

Appearing on the KAMS online morning show, Mr. Hughes said he does not see the AFC developing any relationship with the PPP, since the two parties differ on a number of issues.

“The PPP is a commercial enterprise. It is a full commercial enterprise. It has a Chief Executive Officer, a Deputy Chief Executive Officer, top tier management but it is about business. The People’s Progressive Party is about business. It is not about the political management of a country. The political management of a country is incidental to the business they operate, which is to give away the contracts and make as much money as is possible. So, I don’t see us being in a position in which we would subscribe to that sort of relationship. They may come a time where ideologically, and politically we may be on the same page but not at the moment,” Hughes told a caller on the programme.

On the possibility of the AFC joining forces again with the PNC through the APNU in time for the next elections, Mr. Hughes said the AFC’s decision will be guided by the citizens of the country.

“The principal objective in terms of coalition is what is in the best interest of Guyana. If the best interest of Guyana at the time of election suggests that there should be a coalition, absolutely, that’s what they suggest,” the AFC Leader said.

In the interim, he said the party is consulting with the masses on the ground even as it tries to rebuild itself, having suffered a significant blow following the last elections. He said the AFC has suffered some significant degree of damage in terms of its electoral appeal and in terms of its electoral prospect, and is rebuilding itself, while hearing from the people.

Last month, Leader of the Opposition, Aubrey Norton told the press that the PNCR led APNU prefers to head to the polls as a united front with its longtime coalition partner, the Alliance for Change.
