Hours after being declared the new Chairperson of the People’s National Congress Reform, Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence, was back at her party’s headquarters to host the Congress of its women’s arm, the National Congress of Women.
She spoke to News Source during the lunch break and laid out some of her plans for the PNC Reform under her Chairmanship.
Lawrence said one of the priorities she has is to ignite a fusion that will see the people who support the party and the party leadership working closer together.
“I plan to sit with my leadership for us to discuss how can we ignite a fusion of here that we will see people, that people will come here, that people will meet with their Ministers, that people will meet with other party executives and so on and they can get their issues addressed, in respective of which side of the line they stand, but to make this, our headquarters a lively place”, Lawrence said.
When she was announced the new Chairperson of the party, trouncing the other two male candidates in the process, Lawrence became the second woman to hold that position in the party’s 61 year history. In her victory speech she said she will be offering her heart to the people of Guyana.
Today, she explained to News Source that “when I talk about having a heart for my people, it simply means that whatever my people are going through, I will feel it too. If somebody is sad, i feel sad for them, if they have lost, I feel that loss too and if they are jobless, I feel helpless and so I can empathize with our people in their various situations and I have been there with my people and so I know the issues which they face and we canvas on fixing those issues and so I want to bring some acceleration to that”.
Lawrence said she would also like to focus more and talk to the grassroots people, since in many instances they are the ones who are more aware of what is going on around the country on the ground.
She said she wants the government and the people of the country to be more engaged.
“I think people want to feel the government now, they want to feel the party and so that is what I want to bring. I want to bring that touch and so I want people to know that while we can’t do everything at one time, that we are addressing their issues. I want people to feel that way. I want people to come to the realization that we are the same people who marched with them on the streets and who cried with them when they loss their sons and their daughters, that we are those same persons and they have put us in higher office and so it is time for party and people to work together.”
One of the immediate focus of the new PNC Reform Chairman will be her party’s preparations for the upcoming Local Government Elections. The party’s new executive is expected to meet soon on that and other issues.
