PNC Chairperson Volda Lawrence granted $100,000 station bail

As protesters remained vigilant outside the headquarters of the Guyana Police Force, investigators granted bail to Chairperson of the People’s National Congress Volda Lawrence hours after she was taken into custody.

Protesters chanted her name after bail was posted to the tune of $100,000.

With Attorney Nigel Hughes at her side, the PNC Reform Chairperson visited the Criminal Investigations Department for questioning but was immediately arrested.

The arrest formed part of the Police Force’s probe into allegations of electoral fraud.

Opposition Leader Joe Harmon in a statement said the actions by the Police is tantamount to harassment and he wants the Director of Public Prosecutions to stand up on the side of the law and decency and withdraw the charges. Lawrence has already been charged in relation to allegations of electoral fraud. Those charges were private and were filed by PPP Member Charles Ramson Jr.

The DPP took over the case and instructed the Police to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

It is that investigation that is currently ongoing by the Police and which has led to the arrest of a number of GECOM officials and officials of the APNU+AFC.

The APNU+AFC Coalition has warned the government about possible retaliatory action over the arrests and charges.
